Tips for Succulent Watering

Updated: May 15, 2024

Watering Technique: When watering succulents, it's important to water deeply and thoroughly. Water the soil around the base of the plant until it is evenly moist, allowing excess water to drain out of the bottom of the pot. Avoid spraying water directly onto the leaves, as this can increase the risk of fungal diseases. Aim to water the soil.

Rainwater and Tap Water: Rainwater is often preferred for watering succulents as it is free of salts and chemicals found in tap water, which can accumulate in the soil over time and harm the plants. If using tap water, allow it to sit overnight to allow chlorine and other chemicals to dissipate before watering your succulents.

Frequency: Succulents should be watered infrequently but deeply. The frequency of watering depends on various factors such as the climate, temperature, humidity levels, and the type of succulent. Stick your finger into the soil to check for moisture, and only water when the soil feels dry at least an inch deep. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Seasonal Adjustments: Adjust your watering schedule based on the seasons. Succulents typically require more frequent watering during the active growing season (spring and summer) when they are actively growing and less water during the dormant period (fall and winter) when growth slows down. Be particularly cautious with watering during the winter months to prevent overwatering, as succulents are more susceptible to root rot in cooler temperatures.

Container Size and Type: The size and type of container you use can affect the watering needs of succulents. Larger pots generally retain moisture for longer periods, while smaller pots dry out more quickly. Choose pots with drainage holes to ensure excess water can escape freely, preventing waterlogged soil and root rot.

Monitor for Signs of Overwatering and Underwatering: Keep an eye on your succulents for signs of both overwatering and underwatering. Symptoms of overwatering include yellowing or translucent leaves, soft or mushy stems, and a foul smell from the soil. Underwatered succulents may develop shriveled or wrinkled leaves. Adjust your watering habits accordingly based on the condition of your plants.

PRO TIP!

Watering from Below: Some succulent enthusiasts prefer to water their plants from below by placing the pots in a shallow tray or basin of water. This allows the roots to soak up water from the bottom, promoting healthy root growth. However, be sure to empty the excess water from the tray after watering to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged.
