7 Musts for Healthy Succulents

Updated: May 15, 2024

Succulents are popular plants known for their thick, fleshy leaves and stems, which are adapted to store water. They come in various shapes, sizes, and colors, making them attractive choices for both indoor and outdoor gardens. Proper care is essential for keeping succulents healthy and thriving.

Here are 7 key details you need to know for a healty succulent:

Light: Succulents generally require plenty of sunlight to thrive. Place them in a location where they can receive at least six hours of bright, indirect sunlight per day. South-facing windows are often ideal for indoor succulents. Outdoors, choose a spot with partial to full sun exposure.

Watering: Succulents are drought-tolerant plants and are susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Water them thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. The frequency of watering depends on factors such as the climate, the type of succulent, and the potting mix used. Generally, watering once every 1-2 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) is sufficient. Reduce watering in the winter when succulents are in dormancy.

Soil: Well-draining soil is crucial for succulents to prevent waterlogged roots. Use a specialized succulent or cactus potting mix, or create your own by adding perlite or coarse sand to regular potting soil to improve drainage.

Container: Choose a container with drainage holes to allow excess water to escape freely. Terra cotta pots are a good choice because they allow air circulation and help wick away excess moisture from the soil.

Temperature and Humidity: Succulents prefer warm temperatures and lowhumidity. Most varieties can tolerate temperatures between 60°F to 80°F (15°C to 27°C). Protect them from cold drafts and frost, especially in winter. Indoors, maintain a moderate humidity level, as excessive moisture can lead to fungal diseases.

Fertilizing: Feed succulents sparingly during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply fertilizer every 2-4 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the dormant period.

Pests and Diseases: Watch out for common pests such as aphids, mealybugs, and spider mites, especially on indoor succulents. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Overwatering can lead to root rot and fungal diseases, so always ensure proper drainage and avoid waterlogged soil.
